Thalhah bin Ubaidillah was a friend of the Prophet of SAW who came from the tribe of Quraysh. He was among those who were promised to enter heaven because of his struggle to embrace and uphold the Shari'a of Allah SWT.
His full name is Thalhah bin Ubaidillah bin Usman bin Kaab bin Lu’ay bin Ghalib bin Fihr bin Malik bin an-Nadhr bin Kinanah, al-Qurasyi at-Taimi al-Makki and al-Madani. His lineage met with the Prophet Muhammad on Murrah bin Ka’ab bin Lu’ay, also with Abu Bakr Shiddiq on Taim bin Murrah. They both came from Kabilah Taim.
Thalhah's father was from Quraysh who had died during the jahiliyah. Not a single story tells of his father's attitude at the time of the arrival of Islam. His mother was Sha’bah bint al-Hadhrami, sister of al-Ala’ bin al-Hadhrami, a friend who converted to Islam and emigrated.
His uncle, Amr bin Usman, also converted to Islam, emigrated to Medina, and participated in the Qadisiyah War. Then, his maternal grandmother was Atikah bint Wahab bin Abdu bin Qushay bin Kilab. Wahab bin Abdu was the only person responsible for taking care of the food of the pilgrims.
Thalhah became the brother-in-law of the Prophet through his four wives. Thalhah married Umm Kulthum bint Abu Bakr who was Aisha's sister, Hamnah bint Jahsh who was Zainab's sister, Rafa’ah bint Abu Sufyan who was Habibah's sister, and Qaribah bint Abi Umayyah who was the sister of Umm Salamah.
He also married Khauah bint Qa’qa’ bin Mu’id, who was nicknamed the ‘stream of the Euphrates’ river because of his generosity. From his marriage, he had many children. Among his famous children, Muhammad bin Thalhah who holds the titles as-Sajjad, Moses, and Isa. His most famous daughter was Aisha bint Talha and Umm Ishaq, the woman whom Hussein ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib married. Later, after Hussein died, his younger brother Hasan married the woman.
Talhah bin Ubaidillah was born in the center of the Hejaz region and grew up in the desert region. He has strong body characteristics, a strong attitude and an attitude that is not easily shaken. He is known as a generous and very kind person. Thalhah had no qualms about facing the enemy. There is no opponent to be feared, and is undaunted by the rigors of the battlefield.
Talha also spent his wealth for good and defended Islam and helped those in need. Thalhah always plunged into the field of jihad to protect the Prophet, and defend his proselytization, and spread his treatise. It is like a strong tree when it stands and walks on the face of the earth. His generosity is unparalleled. So many benefits that he gave so many people appreciate it.
The beauty and beauty of his body become another specialty. His son, Musa bin Thalhah, described his father as having a reddish white skin. They are medium in height and tend to be rather short. Chests. Both shoulders are wide.
If he looked, his whole body would still look solid. He has big feet. His face was handsome with a slender nose. He always walked with quick footsteps. He never changed his hair color either.
As a teenager, Thalhah bin Ubaidillah grew up to become a strong person with a smart mindset. He grew up with friends of his age, such as Zubair bin Awwam and Sa’ad bin Abi Waqqash. The three of them were very close.
When the Prophet received revelation, Talha was only 15 years old. However, Thalhah was not very familiar with the person of the Prophet at that time, because their age was about 25 years. Thalhah who is still a teenager knows the faith brought by the Prophet when he was in Sham.
At that time, he was on a journey with traders to Basrah. Then, a famous monk in the country asked the merchant troupe about their origin. Talhah admitted he was from Makkah and told that from Makkah will be born a last prophet named Ahmad son of Abdullah bin Abdul Mutahlib. After getting the prophethood then he will migrate to a place that has many date palms, rocky, and many swamps.
The monk advised Talha bin Ubaidillah to immediately meet the Prophet SAW. So, he rushed back to Makkah and asked what happened.
As it turned out, when Talha left, the Messenger of Allah SAW had obtained a prophetic sign. Then, he immediately met Abu Bakr and asked him about the truth. Abu Bakr had acknowledged Muhammad's prophethood and ordered Talha to meet the Prophet PBUH.
They both went together. Talha became one of the first people to embrace Islam and to recognize Muhammad as an apostle of Allah. Allah SWT has given Talhah intelligence and good personality, so that it never wavers with confidence to the Prophet SAW. Including believing the words of the monk and Abu Bakr Shiddiq.
After embracing Islam, Thalhah bin Ubaidillah joined the Prophet Muhammad migrated to Medina. He also participated in accompanying the Prophet of SAW in all battlefields except the Battle of Badr. Because at that time Thalhah and Sa’id bin Zaid was assigned to outside Medina.
However, both were saddened to not join the Prophet for his first jihad. The Prophet then calmed him because the task he carried with his reward was like the wages of soldiers on the battlefield.
Thalhah ibn Ubaidillah (Shahid the Living) he traveled with a caravan of Quraysh in order to trade to Sham. Upon arrival in Bushra, Quraysh traders entered the crowded market to sell.
Another case with Thalhah ibn Ubaidillah who was a young age, his knowledge and experience of trading was not like the old traders. But the young man was smart and ingenious, so did not hesitate to compete with those who were old and experienced in gaining profits when trading.
While they were in a crowded market with visitors from all over, Talha experienced an event that changed the course of his life completely. Let us listen to Thalhah recounting his own life.
Thalhah bin Ubaidillah said, “When we were in the market of Bushra, suddenly a pastor exclaimed: “Consideration! Attention to the merchants! Are any of the gentlemen from the city of Mecca?”
I happened to be not far from the priest. Then I approached him and said, “Yes, I am a resident of Makkah!”
“Has appeared in the midst of you a man named Ahmad?” ask the priest.
“ Which ahmad?” I answered back, asking,
“Ahmad Ibn ‘Abdullah bin ‘Abdul Muttalib. This month he's definitely showing up. He is the Prophet of Cover. And he will come out (migra and flee) from your land the Haram, move to the black rocky land, many date palms, the fertile land of prosperity radiates water and salt. You'd better meet him soon, hi lads!” the priest explained.
The news I received from the priest was ingrained into my heart. Then I took the camel, and I immediately returned to Makkah. The caravan I left behind, until at Makkah, I asked my family.
“Is there an event that happened in Makkah after my death?” “There! answer them.
“Muhammad bin Abdullah claimed to be a Prophet. And Prince Abu Quhafah (Abu Bakr Shiddiq) believes and follows what he says.”
Thalhah ibn Ubaidillah chimed in on their words, “Yes, I know Abu Bakr. He was a big man, loving and gentle. He is a highly ethical and opinionated trader. We were good friends with him, and loved his council because he was a historian of the Quraysh and a descendant of that tribe.”
Hearing that, I went and met Abu Bakr and asked him, “That is the news about Muhammad bin Abdullah, that he was appointed Prophet, and you became his follower?”
“Betul!” answer Abu Bakr.
Then it was told to me the story of Muhammad being the Prophet and the Apostle (since the events in the cave of Hira’, until the descent of the first verse). Then I entered the new religion.
And vice versa, I also told him about my meeting with pastor Bushra, and the news he gave me.
Abu Bakr was stunned to hear my story. Then he said, “Let's go see Muhammad. Tell him about the incident you experienced with the pastor of Bushra, and also hear what Muhammad said about the religion he brought, so that you know and enter it.”
“I went with Abu Bakr to see Muhammad, After meeting him, he explained about Islam and recited some verses of the Quran to me. Then I was delighted with the goodness of the world and the hereafter.“ said Thalhah continuing his story.
My chest feels roomy to accept Islam. I told him about my meeting with the pastor in Bushra. He was so happy to hear my story that the joy was clearly on his face. Then I said before him, there is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. With my creed, I am listed as the fourth person to declare Islam before Abu Bakr.
The incident of the entry of this young Quraysh into Islam, is like lightning struck his family. They complain, fidget and complain. And the saddest was Thalhah's own mother. Because her mother expected Thalhah ibn Ubaidillah to be a leader for her people, the mother had seen the talent contained in the person of her son, high and noble.
People like Talha tried hard to restore it to their ancestral religion, the pagan religion, but they were unsuccessful, because the establishment of the Talha was very strong and strong, because the foundation of the Talha was very strong, like a rock that is plunged into the bowels of the earth, it cannot be shaken even a little.
After they desperately persuaded Talha in a meek manner, they finally acted violently by torturing and hurting him.
Mas’ud bin Kharasy said, “One day, when I was’i between Shafa and Marwa, I saw a group of people herding a young man with their hands shackled to his nape. The crowd was running around behind the young man, pushing him, whipping and beating his head. With the crowd there was an elderly woman, shouting at the young man with a curse.
I asked, “Why is the young man?”
I asked, “Who is that old woman?”
Answer them, “Ash Sha’bah bint Al Hadhramy, the young man's biological mother!” Later, Naufal bin Khuwalid, nicknamed as “Asadul Quraisy” (Lion of Quraysh), stood in front of Talhah and tied her up with a rope. Then he tied up Abu Bakr Shiddiq. After that, the two were joined together, then handed over to the heroes and the bouncers of Makkah, to be tortured as they pleased.
So since then, Thalhah bin Ubaidillah and Abu Bakr were called “Al Qarin” (A pair of friends who are bound).
Day by day, keep going. One event and another are connected. Thalhah bin Ubaidillah is growing older and more mature. The trials he endured for risking the religion of Allah and His Messenger increased and grew.
But the devotion and struggle of the Thalhah to uphold the religion of Islam and defend the Muslims is growing and expanding. So that the Muslims call it “Asy Syahidul Hayy” (Living martyrs), and the Prophet dubbed it “Thalhah Al Khair” (Good Thalhah), or “Thalhah Al Jaud” (Glorious Talhah), or, and “Thalhah Al Fayyadh” (Thalhah the benefactor).
Each name of the plug has its own background story, each of which is no less important than the other. As for the name jolokan “Asy Syahid Hayy” (Living martyr), he obtained in the war Uhud. When the ranks of the Muslims were divided and in disarray from beside the Prophet, the Muslim soldiers who lived near him were only eleven Anshar and Thalhah ibn Ubaidillah from the Muhajireen.
The Messenger of Allah and those who escorted him up a hill, but he was confronted by hundreds of polytheists who were about to kill him. Then said the Prophet, “Who dares to resist them, then he becomes my friend in heaven.”
“I, yes Rasulullah! thalhah.
“No! Not thou! You must stay where you are!
Prophet ordered. “I, yes Rasulullah! said a friend of Anshar.
“Yes! You!” Rasulullah.
The Anshar warrior advanced against the polytheists, so that the Anshar warrior died defending his prophet. The Prophet continued to rise, but was also confronted by the army of polytheists.
Said the Prophet, “Who dares to resist them this?”
“I, yes Rasulullah! the word Thalhah precedes the others.
“No! Not thou! You stay where you are! “ says the Prophet reigned.
“I, yes Rasulullah!” said one soldier Anshar.
The Anshar warrior advanced against the polytheists, so that the Anshar warrior died defending his prophet. The Prophet continued to rise, but was also confronted by the army of polytheists.

“I, yes Rasulullah! the word Thalhah precedes the others.

“I, yes Rasulullah!” said one soldier Anshar.
Said the Prophet to Thalhah, “Now you, O Thalhah!” In the war, the Prophet broke his fangs and injured his lips, so that blood poured out on his face, and he was exhausted. Therefore, Talha pounced on his enemy and drove them away with all his might, so that they could not approach the Messenger of Allah.
Then Talha bin Ubaidillah returned to the nearby Prophet, and he raised him slightly to the hill, and leaned him to the cliff. After that he attacked the enemy again, so he managed to get rid of them from the Messenger of Allah.
Said Abu Bakr, “I and Abu Ubaidillah bin Jarah while being some distance from the Prophet. After we arrived to help, he said, “Leave me! Help Thalhah, your friends!”
We found Thalhah ibn Ubaidillah covered in blood, which flowed from all over his body. On his body were seventy-nine scars of sword slashes, or javelin stabs, and arrow throws.
Her wrists were severed next to her, and she was lying on the ground in a fainting state.” The Prophet said afterwards about Talha,
“Who would like to see people walking on earth after experiencing their death, then look at Thalhah bin Ubaidillah!”
When people speak of the battle of Uhud in the presence of Abu Bakr Shiddiq, then Abu Bakr said, “War that day was the battle of Thalhah ibn Ubaidillah in its entirety.” Such is the story, so that Thalhah was nicknamed “Asy Syahidul Hayy” (Living martyrs).
As for why the title “Thalhah Al Khair “ or “Thalhah Al Jaud”, contains one hundred and one kind of stories. But we nucilkan here two of them because Talhah bin Ubaidillah is a big trader.
One afternoon he profited from Hadhramaut by about 700 000 dirhams. She was frightened, agitated and worried. So asked by his wife Umm Kaltsum bint Abu Bakr Shiddiq,
“Why are you restless, hi Abu Muhammad, What is our fault that you are restless?”
Answer Thalhah, “No! You are a good and faithful wife! But something occurred to me since last night, as usual one's mind is fixed on his Lord when he sleeps, while this treasure is piled up in his house.”
Answer his wife, Umm Kalthum, “Why are you so worried about it. Are not your people who need your help. Tomorrow morning hand out the money to them.”
Thalhah said, “Rahimakillah. (May Allah bestow His mercy upon you!). You are a woman of taufiq, the son of one who is always taufiq by Allah.”
Early in the morning, the money was put into large and small coffers, and distributed to the poor of the Muhajirin and the Anshar.
A man once came to Talha bin Ubaidillah asking for his help. Thalhah's heart was moved by the pity towards that person.
Then the man said, “I have a piece of land that Uthman ibn ‘Affan gave me, for three hundred thousand. If you like, take the land, or I will buy you three hundred thousand dirhams.”
Said the guy, “Let me just take the money.” Talha ibn Ubaidillah gave him three hundred thousand dollars.
During the Battle of Jamal, Thalhah met Saidina Ali ra and Saidina Ali warned him to retreat to the rear. An arrow hit his calf, so he was immediately transferred to Basrah and did not join the war how long later because of his deep wounds he died.
Talha bin Ubaidillah died at the age of 60 and was buried somewhere near the grasslands of Basrah. The Prophet once said to the companions of radhiallahu ‘anhum, “This person includes the fallen and anyone who is happy to see a martyr walking on the earth, then look at Talha.
It is also said by Allah SWT in His word: “Among those who believe there are those who keep what they have promised to Allah, and some of them are slain. And among them there are (after all) who are waiting and they did not change their promises in the slightest.” (Al-Bahlab: 23). Wallahua’lam!
