At one time, Salman wanted to get married. During this time, he secretly liked a pious woman from among Anshar. However, he did not dare to propose to her. As an immigrant, he felt alien to his residence, Medina.
Salman did not know the customs of a man proposing to women in the Madinah community. He also did not know about the tradition of Anshar when preaching women. Salman is lacking in understanding of Arab culture. So he did not dare to knock on the door of the woman he liked.
Salman then went to a friend who is a native of Medina, Abu Darda’. He intended to ask Abu Darda’ for help to accompany him while preaching the woman of his dreams. Hearing him, Abu Darda’ was so excited.
“Subhanallah wa alhamdulillah,” said Abu Darda’ was so happy to hear his best friend was planning to get married. He embraced Salman and was willing to help and support him.
After a few days of preparing everything, Salman came to the girl's house accompanied by Abu Darda’. Both are so happy. Once in the house of the salihah woman, both were well received by the host.
“I am Abu Darda’ and this is my brother, Salman of Persia. Allah has glorified Salman with Islam. Salman has also glorified Islam with jihad and its practices. He has a close relationship with the Prophet of the Holy Spirit. In fact, the Prophet saw it as his ahlu bait (family),” Abu Darda’ said using the local Arabic dialect very smoothly and fluently.
“I came to represent my brother, Salman, to propose to your daughter,” he continued to the woman's guardian explaining the intent of their arrival.
Hearing that, the host was honored. Of course, he came two friends of the Prophet SAW the main. One of them even wants to propose to his daughter. “It is an honor for us to receive the noble companion of the Prophet. It is also an honor for our family to have a daughter-in-law from among friends,” said the woman's father.
“This application is our daughter's full right. Therefore, I leave it to our daughter,” he told Abu Darda’ and Salman al-Farisi.
The host then gave a signal to his wife and daughter who were behind the hijab. Apparently, her daughter had been waiting to give her opinion regarding the man who proposed to her. Representing the princess, her mother said, “Please excuse us for being frank,” he said making Salman and Abu Darda’ tense waiting for an answer.
“Sorry for our straightforwardness. Our daughter rejected Salman's proposal,” replied the woman's mother would certainly break Salman's heart. However, Salman is tough.
Not there, the mother continued her daughter's answer. “However, since you two are the ones who come and hope for the pleasure of Allah, I would like to say that our daughter will answer yes if Abu Darda’ has the same desire as Salman.” said the woman's mother salihah Salman's desire to be a wife. However, instead the woman chose Abu Darda’, who only accompanied Salman.
If like men in general, then Salman's heart must be broken into pieces. He will feel a huge heartbreak. However, Salman is a pious man, a noble from among the friends of the Prophet of the Holy Spirit. With a tremendous stubbornness, he replied, “Allahu akbar!” salman is excited.
Not only that, Salman actually offered help for his second marriage. Without a broken heart, he gave away all the possessions he had prepared to marry the woman. “All the dowry and living I prepared will give all to Abu Darda’. I will also be a witness to your marriage,” Salman said with a great spaciousness of heart.
Such is the love story of the Prophet's noble friend, Salman al-Farisi. There are many lessons to be learned from this story. Salman's determination should be made uswah. He is not disappointed with what he does not have even if he wants it.
