SHE was one of the noblest women of the time, coming from a very respectable and distinguished family. She was also a beautiful woman and had considerable wealth, becoming a prominent businesswoman. Marrying her would be a great achievement for anyone, and indeed, some of the most prominent and wealthy men in Arab society when it has asked for her hand. However, she rejected everything; already a widow, she had already lost the desire to remarry.
Until a man enters into his life. He was a 25-year-old young man, and although he was also a very noble family, he was an orphan and not a man of many styles.
The young man used to take care of a skinny sheep becoming very fat in the hills surrounding the city. However, he had perfect moral character, and he was widely known as one of the most honest people. That's what drew him from the young man: he was looking for someone honest who could run his business, because she—a woman in patriarchal society— couldn't do it alone. So, he began to think how to approach her in a polite, righteous and honorable manner.
After returning from his first business trip to the young man, he asked his servant, whom he sent with him, about him and his behavior. His servant was greatly amazed: this young man was the kindest and most gentle man he had ever met. Never did he treat the servant as harshly as anyone else did. However, there was more: as they walked through the hot desert, the servant noticed that the clouds were following them all the time, protecting them from the scorching sun. The female businessman was quite impressed with his new employee.
Not only that, these new hires proved to be shrewd entrepreneurs. He took his wares, sold them, and with profit bought other wares which he sold again, thus profitably doubled. All this was enough for him: the embers of love in his heart that had been extinguished, rekindled again, and he decided to marry this young man, who was 15 years younger than him.
So, he sent his brother to this young man. The brother asked the young man, “Why aren't you married?”
“Because of lack of capital,” replied the youth.
“What if I offer you a future wife who is a noble, beautiful, and she is also rich? Are you interested?” ask the sister.
The young man replied firmly, but when the brother mentioned his sister, the young official chuckled in astonishment.
“How can I marry her? He has rejected the noblest people in this city, much richer and more prominent than I, a poor shepherd,” he said.
“Do not worry,” the sister replied, “I will take care of it.”
They were married for 25 years, and she gave birth to seven children: 3 sons and 4 daughters. All their sons died at a young age. Khadijah (RA) is a source of immense love, strength, and comfort for the Prophet Muhammad SAW, and he heavily leans on this love and support on the most important night of his life.
While he was meditating in the cave of Hira, the Angel Gabriel (USA) came to the Prophet Muhammad SAW and revealed to him the first verses of the Quran and declared to him that he would become a Prophet. The experience frightened Prophet Muhammad SAW, and he ran home, jumping into the hands of Khadijah (RA) while crying, “Cover me! Cover me!”
Khadijah was greatly shocked by Muhammad's trembling, and after calming and comforting him for a while, the Prophet was able to calm himself down and recount his experiences.
The Prophet (PBUH) feared that he had lost his mind or possessed. Khadijah (RA) dashed all his fears and told him to rest.
“Do not worry,” said Khadijah, “For the sake of Him who controls the soul of Khadijah, I hope that you will be a prophet to this people. God will never humiliate you, because you are kind to your family, you are always true to your words, you help those in need, you support the weak, you feed guests and you answer the call of those in trouble. ”
He then took it to his cousin, Waraqah ibn Naufal—a pious man who understood the scriptures of Gospels— and Waraqah confirmed to the Prophet SAW that his experience was Divine and he was the Last Prophet.
After his prophethood began, and the people became violent and brutal, Khadijah (RA) was always there to support the Prophet Muhammad SAW, sacrificing all his wealth to support Islam. When Prophet Muhammad SAW and his family were banished to the hills outside the city of Mecca, he went there with him, for three years of suffering. Khadijah left the Prophet in this period. Prophet Muhammad SAW greatly lost him, and even after his departure, Prophet Muhammad SAW would send food and support to friends and relatives of Khadijah, out of love for his first wife.
One time, years after Khadijah (RA) died, he found a necklace that had been worn by Khadijah. When he saw it, the Prophet remembered it and began to weep and mourn. His love for her never died, so Aisha never felt jealous of him. Aisha once asked Prophet Muhammad SAW if Khadijah (RA) was the only woman worthy of love.
The Prophet replied: “He believed me when no one else did; he accepted Islam when people rejected me; and he helped and comforted me when no one else could help me.”
During Khadijah's time with him, the Prophet never married another woman.
