Stay With Qur'An
Umair ibn Wahab

Umair ibn Wahab al-Jumahi was one of the pagan leaders of the Quraysh of Mecca who strongly opposed the proselytization of Islam. In fact, Umair ibn Wahab also included people who often tortured the Prophet Muhammad and Muslims if they still live in Mecca or do not migrate to Medina.

Like other pagan Quraish leaders, Umair ibn Wahab al-Jumahi participated in the Battle of Badr. A war between the Muslim armies and the infidels of the Quraysh of Mecca, in which the infidels outnumbered the Muslims tripled.

Victory remained in favor of the Muslim team, Umair ibn Wahab al-Jumah was fortunate, he was not killed in the Battle of Badr, while his comrades, who were also the infidel leaders of Makkah, Quraish Abu Jahl and Umayyah, were not killed in the Battle of Badr, while his comrades, who were also the infidel leaders of Makkah, Quraish Abu Jahl and Umayyah, were also the most prominent, killed in that battle.

However, the outcome of the Battle of Badr left a deep wound in the heart of Umair ibn Wahab al-Jumah, when his son Wahab ibn Umair fell into the hands of Muslim forces. Sometime after the Battle of Badr, Umair ibn Wahab sat with Shafwan ibn Umayyah, at that time, Shafwan ibn Umayyah encouraged Umair ibn Wahab to take revenge on Muslims.

In order to pump up the vengeful spirit of Umair ibn Wahab, Shafwan promised to pay all debts and protect Umair ibn Wahab and his family if his mission was successful. It did not take long for Umair ibn Wahab to accept Shafwan's proposal, armed with a sharp sword, Umair ibn Wahab al-Jumahi set out on a camel to Medina on a mission of revenge, killing the Islamic leader of the Prophet Muhammad.

Long story short, using a sword, Umair bin Wahab al-Jumahi finally arrived in front of the Nabawi Mosque.

Sayyidina Umar bin Khattab and his companions immediately secured Umair bin Wahab in front of the mosque. His friend then took him to the Prophet Muhammad, saw. “What's your arrival destination, Umair?” the Prophet Muhammad SAW. Umair ibn Wahab did not immediately respond to the real intent and purpose of coming to Medina.

First he replied that he came to Medina to ask the prophet Muhammad and the Muslims did good to the prisoners of war in Badr where their children were.

Prophet Muhammad, who already knew the purpose of Umair, encouraged Umair ibn Wahab to tell the truth about his purpose of coming to Medina.

Umair insisted that his goal of going to Medina was none other than to ask that prisoners of war be treated well and for no other purpose. Prophet Muhammad SAW. then revealed the meeting and conversation of Umair bin Wahab with Shafwan bin Umayyah in Hijri the day before leaving for Medina.

What the Prophet Muhammad cared about, was exactly the same as what Umair ibn Wahab talked about with Shafwan ibn Umayyah at that time. “Don't Shafwan want to incur your debt and your family's if you want to kill me? Dear God, there is no way you can do that,” said Prophet Muhammad SAW. Umair bin Wahab was amazed by what Prophet Muhammad said. How could anyone else be able to know his conversation with Shafwan bin Umayyah.

So Umair ibn Wahab al-Jumahi immediately believed what the Prophet Muhammad said, that it was a revelation from God. Umair then made two confessions and converted to Islam. After some time, Umair ibn Wahab returned to Mecca and spread Islam there.

“Really Umair has become someone I love more than some of my children.” (Umar bin al - Khattab)

At that time Umar bin al-Khattab was sitting near the door of the mosque with his friends, they talked about the battle of Badr and what he brought from the Quraysh in the form of prisoners of war and their sacrifices, remembering their heroism.

Among the people of Muhajirin and Ansar, they used to talk about the victory that Allah Ta’ala gave them, the defeat and humiliation that Allah Ta’ala gave to their enemies.

Suddenly Umar turned his head and he saw Umair ibn Wahab coming out from behind his vehicle and walking towards the mosque with a sword in his hand, so Umar rose up in distress and said: “Dog, the Enemy of the Lord Umair ibn Wahab. He did not come from God except with evil intentions. He influenced the Meccan polytheists who were hostile to us and became their spies before the war Badr.”

Then Umar said to his companions: “Go to the Messenger of Allah, and remain by his side, beware of the cunning of this rotten man.”

Then Umar rushed to the Prophet, and he said to him: “Yes the Messenger of Allah, this is Umair the son of Wahab, the enemy of Allah, who came with a drawn sword. He came with malicious intent.”

Prophet shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said, “Bring him in to me.”

Al-Faruq brought Umair ibn Wahab to the Prophet by gripping his collar and draping his sword string around his neck.

When the Prophet saw him in such a condition, he said, “Let him go, O Umar.” So Umar let go. Then he said to Umar, “Retreat from me.” So Umar retreated. Then Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam approached Umair bin Wahab and he said, “Near o Umair.” Umair said, “An’im shabahan.” This is a greeting of jahiliyah.

Allah's Apostle Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “God has honored us with a better honor than you said. God has glorified us with greetings, he is a tribute to the inhabitants of heaven.”

So Umair said, “By Allah, you yourself are no stranger to our reverence and you have not long left it.”

Umair replied, “I came in the hope that you would release the captives in your hands, do good to him for my sake.”

The Prophet of Allah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam asked, “Then why is the sword on your shoulder?”

Umair replied, “Badar is bad and useless for us in Badr.” war

Prophet shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam railed, “Tell me honestly, what made you come to me?”

Umair replied, “I didn't come except for that.”

The Prophet of Allah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said, “Not so, but you sat down with Shafwan bin Umayyah in Hijir, then you both remembered the Quraysh who were thrown into the well of Badr. You said, ‘If it were not for the debt I owe and the family I bear I would have gone to meet Muhammad to kill him’. Then Shafwan bin Umayyah shouldered your debt and guaranteed your family life on the condition that you kill me. Allah Ta’ala prevents you from doing that.”

Umair was stunned for a moment, then he said, “I testify that you are the messenger of God.”

Then he hastily added, “Yes the Messenger of Allah, we used to deny you by not believing the heavenly news you brought and the revelation that came down to you, but my story with Shafwan bin Umayyah is known only to both of us. By Allah, I am sure that all that speaks to you is Allah. Praise be to Allah who has guided me to Islam.”

Then Umair testified that there was no god but Allah and that Muhammad was the messenger of Allah, he converted to Islam.

Allah's Apostle Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said to friends, “Make your brother understand (with) his religion and teach him the Quran and release his captives.”

The Muslims were glad that Umair ibn Wahab converted to Islam until Umar ibn al-Khattab said: “I loved the pig more than Umair ibn Wahab when he came to the prophet, God blessed him and gave him peace, but now I love him. More than my own children.”

Umair continued to purify himself with the teachings of Islam, filling his heart with the light of the Qur’an, that is, in the days of his most beautiful and benevolent life, which is, that made him forget Mecca and those who lived there.

Shafwan Bin Umayyah put his hopes on Umair, he passed by a group of Quraysh while saying: “Glen up, good news will reach you in the near future, news that will make you forget the defeat at Badar.”

Shafwan Bin Umayyah waited and waited, his hope lasted a long time, finally anxiety slowly slipped into his mind, until he went to the hottest embers, he began to ask the traveling troupe that passed by. About Umair ibn Wahab, but he did not find a satisfactory answer.

Until a traveler came who said to him, “Umair has converted to Islam.”

The news that reached the ears of Shafwan was like a lightning strike, because before he believed Umair would not convert to Islam even though the entire population of the country converted to Islam.

Umair ibn Wahab continued to study his religion, memorizing the words of Allah that he could memorize, until he came to the Prophet, may he bless him and give him peace, and said: “O Prophet, I have spent time where I have always tried to extinguish the light of God, often causing disruption to those who come to the religion of God.

I want you to give me permission to go to Mecca to call the Quraysh to Allah and His Apostle, if they agree to it from me, then what they do is the best practice, but if they turn away, I will be with them as I do with those who convert to Islam.

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and give him peace, permit this, so Umair came to Mecca, he came to the house of Shafwan and said: “Wahai Shafwan, you are indeed one of the nobles of Mecca, he came to the house of Shafwan and said: Wahai Shafwan, you are indeed one of the nobles of Mecca, one of the wise among the Quraysh, do you think what you have believed all along is to worship the stone and kill it, do you think it is right to make it a religion? I confess that there is no true God other than Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”

Umair ibn Wahab then continued to preach in Mecca until many Meccans converted to Islam at his invitation, until he closed the age during the leadership of Caliph Umar bin Khattab around 584 – 3 November 644).

however, there is no definitive information on when he died.

May Allah give Omair the son of Wahab a great reward and light his grave. Wallahua’lam!
