Zubair bin Awwam was one of his noble companions. It includes 10 people who are guaranteed to go to heaven even though he has not died. He was one of the six shura scholars, who sought to succeed the caliph Umar bin Khattab, in recognition of his scholarship and maturity.
Zubair was the niece of Khadijah radhiallahu's mother ‘anha, because his father was the brother of the ummul mukminin. As for her mother is the aunt of Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, Shafiyyah bint Abdul Muttalib. The Quraysh man's narration is as follows: Zubair bin Awwam bin Khuwailid bin Asad bin Abdul Uzza bin Qushay bin Kilab al-Qurasyi al-Asadi. His kun-yah is Abu Abdullah, Hawari Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam.
Hawari Rasulullah was born 28 years before the hijrah, converted to Islam in Mecca when he was 15 years old through the intermediary of Abu Bakr ash-Shiddiq radhiallahu ‘anhu. Of course his Islam provoked the anger of the Quraish pagans, especially among his family. His uncle rolled up his body with a mat, then heated it with fire so that he returned to the religion of his ancestors. But with firm conviction he said,
“I will not return to unbelief forever”.
Among the other privileges of Zubair is that he participated in two hijrahs, migrated to Habasyah and married Abu Bakr's daughter, Asma bint Abu Bakr radhiallahu ‘anha, and then married Abu Bakr's daughter, Asma bint Abu Bakr radhiallahu, then to Medina and got the gift of the first son named Abdullah and the second son Mush’ab radhiallahu ‘anhuma.
The first person to draw a sword in the way of God was Zubair. From Aurah and Ibn al-Musayyib both ceded, “The first man to draw his sword in the way of Allah is Zubair.” The incident occurred when the Prophet Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam was disturbed, then he drew his sword to those who disturbed the Prophet.
Hawari Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam. From Jabir bin Abdillah radhiallahu ‘anhu, Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said in the day of the War of Ahzab, “Who will fight Bani Quraidhah?” Zubair replied, “I (yes Rasulullah)” He again asked, “Who will fight Bani Quraidhah?” Zubair responded again, “I” Then the Prophet said, “Verily every prophet has hawari (loyal friends), and my hawk is Zubair.”
The Angel Gabriel appears with the physical Zubair ibn Awwam in the Battle of Badr. From Aurah ibn Zubair, “Zubair wore a yellow coat (in that day), then Jibril descended to resemble Zubair. At the Battle of Badr, the Prophet put Zubair on the right wing of the army, then there was the figure of Zubair close to the Prophet, he said to him, “War them O Zubair!” Then the man replied, “I'm not Zubair.” Finally the Prophet knew that it was the angel whom Allah had sent down with the figure of Zubair, to help the Muslims in the Battle of Badr.
As is well known in history, there was a dispute between the companions of the Prophet Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam about the lawsuit against the Ottoman assassin bin Affan radhiallahu ‘anhu. A dispute that resulted in a war between them because they were infiltrated by people who complained. This dispute is also a test for us, whether we will be detractors of the Prophet's companions or whether we will honor them as Allah and His Apostle have honored them.
These are among the destinies of God that happen to His servants. As happened to our father, Prophet Adam ‘alaihissalam. Since Allah predestined that men should take the earth as their dwelling place, Allah did not allow Adam to do something that caused him to be expelled from heaven and sent down to earth.
Then will we denounce the Prophet Adam by saying, “If the Prophet Adam had not eaten the fruit of the khuldi, surely we now do not need to feel the weight of trials in the world, we must now be enjoying the beauty of living in heaven.” Of course we wouldn't say that.. Similarly, we do not denounce the companions of the Prophet and forget the virtues that Allah and His Messenger have set for them. We just say,
“If fate happens (has been established), reason is lost.”
When there was a dispute between the companions, two experts shura and including the one who was guaranteed to enter heaven, thalhah ibn Ubaidillah and Zubair ibn Awwam were on opposite sides with Ali ibn Abi Talib. These two companions of the Prophet left Mecca for Bashrah in Iraq to demand the enforcement of the law against the murderers of Uthman. The event occurred in the year 36 H, the peak, the Jamal War.
Ali also reminded Zubair, “Revelation Zubair, I call you in the name of Allah. Do you not remember, one day you went through with the Prophet Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, when we were somewhere, the Prophet asked you, ‘O Zubair, do you love Ali?’
You replied, ‘How can I not love my uncle's son (both from my father's side and mother's side) and he is my religion’.
He continued his word, ‘For the sake of Allah, O Zubair, you will surely fight him and you are on the wrong side’.”
Zubair said, ‘I remember now, and I'm missing from his message. By Allah, I will not fight you.” After leaving the war of slander, finally while praying, Zubair was killed by a traitor named Amr bin Jurmuz.
In the dispute that occurred between the companions of the Prophet, the author reminded that the readers are not ‘sembrono’ in behaving so that sitting the companions of the Prophet is not in a position worthy of them, as Allah and His Messenger have placed them in a high position in our religion. What happens to them is part of God's destiny that God Himself knows best of his wisdom. Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam,
“The stars as guardians of the heavens, when they are lost, what is promised to them will come. And I am the guardian of my friends, when I have gone (died), my friends will come to me what they promised (slander and murder). And my shahabat are the guardians of my people, when my shahabat has gone (died) then will come what was promised to them’.” (CHR. Muslims no. 2531).
Zubair bin Awwam radhiallahu ‘anhu died in the month of Rabiul Awal in 36 H. He was 66 or 67 years old. He was killed by a man named Amr bin Jurmuz. The news of Zubair's death brings deep sorrow to the amirul mukminin Ali bin Abi Thalib radhiallahu ‘anhu, he said, “It is for the murderer of Shafiyyah's son.” When Zubair's sword was brought before him, Ali also kissed the sword while shedding tears, then said “For the sake of Allah, the sword that makes its owner noble (by jihad) and close to the Messenger of Allah (as an offering).
After Zubair's body was buried, Ali said a farewell sentence to Zubair, “Really I hope that I, Thalhah, Zubair, and Uthman are among those whom Allah has spoken,
“And We quench all the grudges that are in their hearts, while they feel brothers sitting face to face on the couch.” (QS. Al-Hijr: 47)
Ali looked at the graves of Thalhah and Zubair while saying, “Truly these two ears of mine heard the Prophet shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said, “Thalhah and Zubair walk in heaven.”
May Allah always bless you and have mercy on you, O Hawari Allah's Messenger Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, and place you in a paradise full of pleasure. Amens..
