His full name is Utbah bin Ghazwan bin Jabir bin Wuhaib bin Nusaib bin Zaid bin Malik bin al Harith bin Auf bin al Harith bin Maazun bin Manshur bin Ikrimah al Maazani. He received the nickname Abu Abdillah, and some scholars of Utbah have the nickname Abu Ghazwan.
Utbah ibn Ghazwan and his tribe were allies of the Banu Naufal ibn Abdi Manaf ibn Qusay or Bani Abdis Shamsy who belonged to the tribe of Quraysh. He is tall, handsome again.
Utbah is included in as sabiqunal awwalun, which is the person who first converted to Islam because he was the seventh person who converted to Islam. This is as he said himself while preaching in the Basrah Country when he served as Governor of Basrah. This became one of the virtues of Utbah bin Ghazwan.
Utbah also had mawali (former slaves) who converted to Islam following in his footsteps. Among his former slaves who converted to Islam, among them was Khabbab bin al Arath. Utbah also has other virtues, such as experiencing hijrah twice. He emigrated to the land of Habash and then followed the hijrah to Yathrib (Madinah).
When he emigrated to Habash, Utbah bin Ghazwan was 40 years old. Then Utbah went back to Mecca because he missed the Prophet SAW. So Utbah followed the hijrah of the Prophet to Medina, this is the second time hijrah.
At that time Utbah followed the hijrah along with Miqdad bin Amr. However, in the hijrah, the two of them set out together with a group of idolatrous troops led by Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl who was still a polytheist.
On the way, this Ikrimah army met the group of Muslim troops contained in the small army, namely Ubaidah bin al Harith. So Utbah bin Ghazwan and Miqdad joined the mulsimins, separating from the polytheists.
Utbah was a muhajirin who was voiced by the Prophet with Abu Dujanah, the brave knight of the Anshar people.
In his Islamic life, always filled with jihad accompanies the Prophet SAW. Utbah included friends who participated in the war of Badr, Uhud, Khandaq, and all wars with the Prophet Muhammad SAW.
Ever since the Quraysh interfered and launched attacks through warfare, Utbah always carried his arrows and spears. He was indeed very skilled at throwing spears and archery with incredible accuracy. After the Prophet died, Utbah did not lay down his weapons, he continued to wander in the war in the way of Allah SWT.
Not a single war was left by Utbah bin Ghazwan. He is famous as a fighter who specializes in arrows and spears. Utbah also participated in the Yamamah war that occurred during the caliphate of Abu Bakr ash Shidiq to fight the false prophet, Musailamah al Kadzab.
During the reign of Amirul Mukminin, Umar bin Khathab sent Utbah to Ubullah to liberate the country from the occupation of the Persian army which wanted to make it as a gateway to destroy the Islamic power that was spreading to the Persian colonies.
Umar said as he was about to unleash the army of Utbah, “Travel with your army, to the farthest extent from the land of Arabia and the nearest border of Persia! Go with the blessing of God and his blessing. Go to God's way who is willing and willing. And whoever refuses shall pay taxes. And for every challenger, then his part sword, indiscriminately! Be steadfast in facing the enemy and fear Allah your Lord!”
When his small army was confronted with the mightiest Persian army Utbah cried out, “Allahu Akbar shadaqah container (God is Great He keeps His promise) and indeed Allah's promise is true, shortly after the battle, Hezbollah was subjugated.
He also managed to conquer cities on the coast of the Persian Gulf such as Maisan and Ahwaz. In his time the city of Hezbollah had a mosque building that numbered up to 7,000 buildings, even though on Friday only the mosque in the city center used Jum’at prayer.
After that he intended to return to Medina, but Amirul Mukminin ordered him to remain there to lead the government in Basrah. Utbah also obeyed the orders of Amirul Mukminin to guide the people to pray, teach religious issues, uphold the law fairly and provide examples of honesty, wara, and simplicity.
Persevering, eroded patterns of luxury and excessive so annoying those who always reduce lust. Once he said in his speech, “For the sake of Allah you have actually seen me with the Prophet as one of the seven groups, PBUH, which had no food except the leaves of the wood so as our mouths were chapped and wound. One day I obtained a provision for a Burdah shirt, then I split two, the next one I gave to Saad bin Malik and the other side I wore to myself.”
Utbah is very afraid of the world that will destroy his religion and the Muslims. He always invites them to live a simple and adulterous life against the world. However, many influenced him to behave as a ruler whose inhabitants appreciated the outward signs and glitter of luxury.
But Utbah said to them. “I take refuge from Allah from the flattery of people against me because of the luxury of the world, but small on the side of God!”
When he saw the objection on the faces of the people because his hard attitude led them to a simple life, he said to them,”Besok the day after tomorrow you will see the government leader held by others in my place.”
When the Hajj season comes Utbah performing the Hajj, while the government of Basrah entrusted to one of his friends. After performing his worship he went to Amirul Mukminin in Medina to resign from the government.
However, Amirul Mukminin Umar Bin Khattab refused by saying a sentence that is often spoken to people like Utbah. “Do you want to put the message on my shoulders, then you leave me to carry it alone? No. gabe. By Allah I will not allow you forever!”
Therefore there was no choice for him, except to obey and obey, then return to Basrah. However, before boarding his vehicle he faced the Qibla and raised his weak palms to the sky, pleading with Allah that he would not be returned to Basrah and not be the leader of the government foreverlength of time.
It turns out that Allah SWT allows his prayers. On his way to Basrah, Utbah returned to his lap. Utbah died by providing perfection of pleasure and perfection of joy because of his sacrifice and devotion, piety, and his kingdom.
