Since the beginning of Islamic preaching for approximately 20 years since the first revelation came down, there is a group of friends who are able to memorize with ordinary abilities. Some are able to memorize everything that is written. There are also those who memorize all the arranged verses. Among them were Ali bin Abu Talib, Ubay bin Ka’ab, Abdullah bin Mas’ud, Abdullah bin Abbas, and Zaid bin Tsabit.
After the Qur'an was revealed perfectly, the Prophet of Allah recited it to the Companions in order as well as the arrangement of letters and verses that we know today.
Zaid bin Tsabit once deposited his memorization to the Prophet Muhammad in the year of his death. In that year, Zaid deposited his memorization twice. The qiro-at is called the qiro-at of Zaid bin Tsabit. Because he also wrote and submitted it to the Prophet to be corrected. And the text, read by the Prophet to the people until he died.
After the Prophet's death, the Muslims were preoccupied with the conflict against the apostates. Many victims fell from the Muslims. In the Battle of Yamamah (war on false prophets) Musailimah al-Kadzab for example, a large number of Quran memorizers were killed. Umar bin al-Khattab is worried that the memorizers of the Koran continue to fall because the conflict is not yet over. He discussed the idea of posting the Koran with Caliph Abu Bakr. Then Abu Bakr beristikharah and mengusayarah with friends.
After that, he called Zaid bin Tsabit, “Truly you are a bright young man. I will give you an important task.” Abu Bakr ordered him to record the Koran.
Zaid also holds a great responsibility. He was tested with a heavy mandate in this great project. He checked and studied until the Quran was compiled and divided by their respective letters. About this great responsibility, Zaid said, “By Allah! If you burden me to move the hill from its place, it will be lighter than you command me to record the Koran.”
He also said, “I researched the Quran, collecting it from the leaves of the palm and the memorization of people.”
But with taufik from God he managed to carry out the great trust well.
Through the proposal of his friend Hudzaifah bin al-Yaman, Caliph Uthman bin Affan also made a policy of uniform reading the Koran. Uthman says, “Who is the most trusted person to write?”
The people replied, “The author of the Prophet, Zaid bin Tsabit.”
Uthman again said, “Who is the most fluent Arabic?”
People replied, “Said bin al-Ash. He is the one whose dialect is most similar to the Prophet.”
Uthman again said, “Said dictates and Zaid writes.”
Zaid bin Tsabit asked other friends for help. The Companions also brought a copy of the Koran in the house of Ummul Mukminin Hafshah bint Umar. Friends helped each other in this great and historic event. They made Zaid's memorization a benchmark.
Ibn Abbas said, “Pastilah the memorizers of the Qur'an from Muhammad's friend knew that Zaid bin Tsabit was a very deep man of his knowledge.”
