As far as I can remember, I had a mother.
"Keika, get up quickly. The sun will rise soon, let's find some nuts and some fruit for breakfast and lunch."
She was a very kind mother, full of warmth and always smiling. A mother who was too precious to me who was useless, who was only a low-level Spirit.
"Mmc ... Yes, I'll wake up ..."
Opening my eyes, looking at the stone roofs I used to see with my smiling mother's face looking at me, she reached out her hand, touched my forehead, rubbed my hair and tapped it a few times while smiling.
"Come~ wakeup~ and we will find~ legumes~ as well as~ fruits~ before the other Spirits~ take it~"
Knock after knock reached my forehead, accompanied by a small chant that mother made. All that drew awareness to me, brought me to wake up immediately and eliminate all the drowsiness that spread a moment ago.
I immediately woke up and held onto my mother's hands, keeping her away from my face.
"I understand, ma'am. So stop doing it, it's a little uncomfortable."
"Wah~ but your face says otherwise, right? Lying is not good."
"Geez, always treat me like a child ..."
"Have~ already~ let's get out quickly. The sooner we finish it, the better and we can get back here."
"... Yeah, I get it."
Mother rubbed my head, then stood up and stretched her body, walking slowly towards the exit of the cave. Outside it was still filled with darkness because the sun had not yet risen but it was at this time that we used to wake up.
Since we live within the mountains, there are quite a lot of things to gain. Especially in the Ampera mountains where there are enough Spirits gathered in it, making the Spiritual Energy occupying the mountain quite concentrated.
The region with the dense Spiritual Energy is a pretty comfortable place for us Spirits since there are very few humans coming, he said, then the fruits that grow inside also become faster and more contained.
Of course there are some shortcomings that go along with it but at least we are not getting such a thing at the moment. Making the daily life we get every day is always filled with peace.
"Alright, maybe for today we will look for sweet potatoes and cassava only. Fruit season is still not coming, we let the fruits grow even bigger until the end of the year."
After wandering around the forest, the mother stopped and looked the other way and walked there. I followed behind him.
"Hm? I don't mind, but what about the nuts?"
"We can still get it next month so there's no need to be too hasty. After taking the sweet potatoes and cassava, we will ask for a little honey from the bees and then mix it to eat later. Keika, what do you think?"
After hearing that, a shadow appeared on my head. Displays boiled yams that emit steam, then pours them with golden honey and eats them.
Thinking it made my stomach sound a few times, mother smiled with a small laugh.
"That sounds great, let's do that.
"Yes, right? Therefore we have to collect a lot of cassava and yam. Then we'll take some sunflowers instead of the honey the bees give later. When mom asked them before, their queen said she wanted sunflowers this time."
"Sunflowers, huh? We can get it on the cliff usually."
"Yes, we can go there after this."
With a humming that accompanied each step, we walked among the grass that stored the dewy liquid, passing through the darkness of the morning with a gust of air that tickled the skin.
In the mountains where we live, the usual place overgrown by cassava and yam is located at the foot of the mountain. It required us to go down the mountain first and pick it up, there were quite a few of them and we only took a few.
With a total of five cassava and five yam, it was already more than enough for a side dish for three days. The size we got this time was quite large, it would probably last four days if we tried to save it.
We put all the cassava and yam in a basket bag made of woven bamboo, lifted it on the back and prepared to go back up the mountain.
And at that moment, I began to realize that there was a sparkle of light at the eastern end of the sky. The light began to penetrate, displaying a blue hue on the sky with a thick white cloud puff.
"Mom, look at that."
I held the hand of the mother walking in front of me and pointed at the direction of the light. Mom turned to him and smiled gently.
"It's morning, huh? A light filled with warmth, a good omen for today."
"Good sign? Can you tell just by looking at it?"
Mother let go of the hand I was holding and held it back, pulled it slowly and we walked up to climb the mountain.
Since we've already taken the food we need, the rest is picking some sunflowers for the bees. It's located on the grass cliffs north of the mountain, which is my mother's favorite place I know.
From what I told you, it seems that's where mom and dad met. The two fell in love at first sight. After all, hearing that from my own mother makes me weird.
Of the many stories my mother gave me, it was one of two stories where I put my father in it. And for the other story is about something I find hard to believe.
It has to do with—
"You know what, Keika? Your father is a high-level Spirit, while mother is a medium-level Spirit. From that relationship, you were born as both of our children and have a potential."
Here it is, the story you always tell when we approach this cliff. While picking the sunflower, I asked.
We have repeated this conversation many times, because I will discuss the same thing when we get here.
"What potential do I have?"
"The potential to become a high-level Spirit, of course. Didn't you tell me that often? Did you forget about it?"
Of course not, how could I possibly forget something that big.
Potential to become a high-level Spirit ... Honestly, I find it hard to believe. Of all the stories my mother told me, this is the only one I can't believe.
Or rather, I highly doubt that.
I mean, how can a low-level Spirit like me become a high-level Spirit? Such a miracle cannot happen to a Spirit like me. That's a very natural thing.
A low-level spirit like me born from a medium-level Spirit and a high-level Spirit is nothing but a failure. Therefore, I don't like this story very much.
And since mom always told me this story when we were on the grass cliffs, it also started to make me not really like these grass cliffs. The only thing I thought about when I was here was how we quickly got back.
"All right, it's all done. Then the rest just needs to go to the bees' hive."
Mother arranged the sunflower stalks neatly in her basket. Imitating that, I also did the same thing to the stalk inside my basket. Then bring it back up.
"The sun has started to rise, maybe we should go a little faster."
"Yes. I'll lead, you stay behind."
"I understand ... Huh?"
When I was about to walk after my mother to enter the forest, something strange happened. The birds in the forest looked agitated and flew in various directions. I noticed it too and approached me.
"Keika, stay by my mother's side."
Mother held my hand tightly and looked at the depths of the forest.
Not long after, the sound of something loud rang out, the sound was getting closer and closer. A shadow appeared at the depth of the forest and in a split second, it came out on the trees and looked at us. There's only one shadow there.
"Armkkhhh .... Arrkkkhhc .... Arckkhh .... "
Shadow with a cracked skull mask, his black body emitted a blue smoke. Then there was the sound of a small groan from the shadow.
I tried to get close to her but she stopped my steps.
"Keika, don't move. He's a shadow eater."
"Shadow eating, but mother ... He looks like he's hurt."
The spirit looked agitated, looking in various directions and his gaze locked on us once again, he observed us. I'm not too sure but the shadow-eater looks scared.
As silence began to fill the gap between us, the shadow-eater finally spoke to us for the first time.
"You two, be the bait for me and lure the damn moon princess."
I who did not understand the meaning of what the black Spirit said, repeated it.
"Moon princess?"
