Japanese Horror Stories
red paper, blue paper

Red Paper, Blue Paper ( ⁇ Akai Kami, Aoi Kami) is one of the urban legends in Japan that is themed horror stories in schools. Although it originated in Japanese urban legends, it is also popular in South Korea as is the Kuchisake-onna story.[1]

The story varies by period and region, but broadly speaking has a number of similarities. It happens at night in the toilet. A male student went to the toilet to defecate. When finished, the toilet paper was not there. Suddenly out of nowhere, a voice sounded, "You, want red paper? or blue paper?"

"Red paper" replied the student. In an instant, blood spurted from the disciple's body. He died on the spot.

Other students who had heard the story, despite the fear of going to the toilet because they could not stand it. The same event happened to him. There was no paper in the toilet. He then asked the same question, "Do you want red paper? or blue paper?"

The student recalled the story of blood spurting from the body of a student as it answered the red paper.

Calmly, he replied, "Blue paper." After answering, blood flowed out from the disciple's body. He died with a blue body.

ORIGINS

This story is older than Hanako-san's story on the Toilet, has been widespread among elementary school students in Nara City since the 1930s. According to the story by word of mouth, in the school toilet there was a mysterious voice "You want to be given red paper, want to be given white paper?" ( ⁇ 、 ⁇ , Akai kami yaro ka, shiroi kami yaro ka).

When tracked down the source of these stories, fear of not being able to answer the questions posed to the replicates in school is the cause. According to the school's rumors, "A frightening final fate will occur depending on the answers given" or "tragedy occurs when unable to answer correctly".

SPLINTER STORY

From the Red Paper story, the Blue Paper evolved splinter stories, not only mentioning red paper/blue paper, but rather red paper/white paper, "Red Coat, Blue Coat", "Red Wind, Blue Hand", and so on",[3] "Red Tongue, Blue Tongue",[3] but the ending is not much different. From the urban legend of the Red Cloak of the early Showa period (the red-coated monster kidnappers) was born the urban legend of the Red Cloak, the Blue Cloak.[4]

The answer "red paper" will end with "a shower of blood from the ceiling" or "a victim fouled with sickles to a bloody stain". The answer "blue paper" will end with "a stranglehold on the neck until the body turns all blue" or its variation, "the paper will be stretched out from inside the toilet toilet toilet toilet closet". In another story, the answer to "You blue paper" would be answered with "Blue paper does not exist," and vice versa.[5] If the victim tries to escape, the toilet door cannot be opened.[5] According to urban legend, although always added, toilet paper always runs out at the site of this strange event.[6]

An elementary school in Kodaira, Tokyo has an urban legend about the fall of red paper or blue paper from above. When red paper is used, the wearer's body becomes red, and vice versa.[7]

Other stories clearly point to the location of the toilet where the strange events took place. In an elementary school in Tokyo there is a rarely used squat toilet next to the school's sports hall. Strange things happened in toilet room number four.[5]

An elementary school in Senboku District in Osaka Prefecture has the urban legend of the White Paper Red Paper. The "red paper" answer will get blood from the ceiling, while the "white paper" answer causes white hands to stick out from below.[7] The color pattern of urban legends in Osaka City elementary schools is red and white.[3] Tongue comes out of the toilet closet to lick the student who answers "red". If the answer is "white", a hand will stroke the student.[3] An elementary school in Higashikurume, Tokyo has an urban legend that asks "You are happy where, red or purple ( ⁇ Aka to murasaki dochira ga suki ka"). The student will be saved if he answers "purple", and according to the story, the person will be dragged into the toilet closet when he answers "red".[3]

Other stories say potential victims will survive if answered in a different color, for example: "yellow paper". But there are also stories that warn not to give answers other than red or blue paper. The answer of another color would cause that person to be taken to another realm. At an elementary school in Yamagata Prefecture, the question turns to "You want blue paper, red paper, or yellow paper?" The student replied, "blue paper". The blue toilet paper he received was still lacking. The student was then given yellow paper and red paper, before the disciple vanished.[3] When he answers "yellow paper," the disciple will fall ill until his whole body is yellow, [8] or get a flush of stool according to another story.[9] In stories like this, the best answer is usually "white paper"[3], "no need",[8] or no reply at all.[[9]

On the patterns of other urban legends, it is not just the sound that is heard. A tall man with a blue face will appear asking questions.[5] In Comoros, Nagano Prefecture, there are stories of people who became suddenly ill and died after retelling this urban legend.[3]
