Bai Yun was a treacherous elder of the Eternal Flame sect, as the battle between the Bai family aided by Usopp and the army of deathless cursed creatures raged down the Water Sea sect, killing the entire world, he was tasked to enter into the soul pool to retrieve the new soul core of the sect.
This soul core stone has been Usopp's main goal so far.
Unfortunately that soul core stone Ye Chen had taken first and the soul just pond was already shattered.
When this matter was told to the head of the Bai family, he became furious and assumed the sect patriarch had taken it and taken it away.
While Usopp who rushed to the ruins of the soul pool when he heard this news pensively, for the first time he was seen riled up since arriving at this elemental realm.

Ye Chen himself could actually erase the trace of his existence on the dimensional portal in the ruins of the soul pool but elder Pang would not have survived to get out of there if he had done so.
